If you observe your lights dimming while driving, it’s likely because of a dying battery. If the car battery is normal, there are other common trouble areas that could be causing the issue. Whether it’s your battery or something else, it is imperative that you have the problem diagnosed and fixed as quickly as possible. If your battery is not the cause of your flickering car lights, it may be a bad light bulb or a bad fuse. Dead light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If your vehicle has a bad fuse, you may be looking at a more significant issue than you had originally anticipated. In most cases, a fuse fails when there is excess electrical current flowing through it. For example, if the anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse will fail. In this situation, a blown fuse would cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that continues to fail, bring it in so we can thoroughly diagnose the bigger, potentially more serious issue.
Flickering lights can also be signs the alternator is dying. Think of it like this, you start your vehicle with power from the battery, but to keep your vehicle running, the power is supplied by the alternator. If you drive an old vehicle with halogen lights, you may notice them get dimmer with a dying alternator. On new cars equipped with LED or HID lights, they may flicker or just stop working altogether.
A failing light switch, either the interior dimmer or the headlight switch knob, also needs to be considered if you have flickering lights on the car. In some uncommon situations, replacing a worn switch might solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older cars. If your car doesn’t fall into either category, there’s a chance it could be symptoms of a bigger issue with the vehicle’s electrical system.
